On Track: School and Job Mentorship
Counselor’s help participants explore and select a vocational path and pursue on-the-job training programs, apprenticeships, and vocational schools.  We want teen mothers to learn how to pursue a career, rather than settle for a minimum wage job.

Hope Chest: Life Tools for Thriving
Counselors teach life skills such as parenting, nutrition, creativity, communication, personal safety, daily living, and money management.  Our goal is for participants to craft the skills necessary to build a healthy, productive life.

Program Successes: On Track: School and Job Mentorship, directed by Jim Knutson has completed its first year.  Our success stories abound.  The success of this program is due to the one-to-one attention that we give to each mom and the many community resources that we use to prepare and train our clients.

We administer personal assessments in both skills and interests and develop a plan with the participation and enthusiasm of each mom.  Case workers, mentors, or Jim administer the plan to assure that the moms have the opportunity to learn from any obstacles that arise.  We model with the moms how to overcome or positively solve problems that will most certainly arise in life.  Here is an overview of some of the accomplishments of On Track from January to July 2007.

Hope Chest, Life Tools for Thriving, has provided pertinent life skills education as taught by a very talented group of Volunteer Faculty since February 2007. As part of our commitment to meet the needs of the moms and to track our outcomes, we are committed to the assurance that our goals are being met with each of our clients. Our staff will be using the Ansell Casey Assessment Tool to help us develop and track our program content and outcomes. This is a national assessment tool that will allow us to determine the individual needs in life skills training for each mom and to develop an individualized plan to teach directly to those areas. Progress will be monitored and re-evaluated with a 60 - 90 day re-assessment using the Ansell Casey assessment program.

A Poem by Desiray
Back On Track

My life was not going so good
I used to say it was because I came from the hood
It was really cuz I was misunderstood
I’m now on track.
And I’m never going back to my old ways
Cuz I’ll just be wasting my days
I am a beautiful person and I need to show it
Cuz all I did was throw it
I need to step up and be a mom and stop doing all this wrong
Cuz life is not that long
I need to change my ways and make the best of my days
Well what I am really trying to say
Is that I enjoyed my stay
It helped me figure out
What I am all about
In the most positive way.
